Going round and round in circles, waiting for something to change?

Most of us recognise this pattern. It’s a very human experience. They even made a movie about it, Groundhog Day.

The mind tends to favour what is familiar. Routine feels safe. And safety, at a deep level, is what the system prioritises. So even when something isn’t making us happy, there is a strong psychological pull to keep things as they are. After all, what we’ve been doing has kept us alive up to this point.

This tendency doesn’t just show up in our personal lives. We can see it at a societal level as well. Despite repeatedly seeing how cycles of violence, hatred and war only lead to more of the same, we continue to repeat them.

On a personal level, the pattern is often more subtle but just as persistent. We find ourselves reacting in the same ways, engaging in the same habits, or falling into forms of self-sabotage that affect us or those around us. We tell ourselves that next time will be different. And yet, when the moment comes, we often find ourselves replaying the same pattern again.

Mindfulness offers a way out of this loop.

When we bring attention to the present moment, something shifts. We remember our intention. We become aware of what is happening as it is happening. And in that moment of awareness, there is space. Space to choose.

Instead of reacting automatically, we can respond differently. We can meet a familiar situation in a new way. Perhaps in a way that feels more aligned with our values. Perhaps in a way that is more supportive, more honest, or more kind.

Sometimes the shift is subtle. Other times it opens the door to something much bigger.

We may find ourselves taking a step in an entirely new direction. Making a change we’ve been postponing. Letting go of the idea that we will do it “when we are ready,” and recognising that readiness often comes after we begin, not before.

Each time we choose a different path, even in a small way, we step out of the trance of repetition. Life begins to feel more vivid. There is a sense of freshness, even a quiet excitement.

And something else becomes clear.

The imagined outcomes our mind creates about what might happen if we change are often limited. When we actually take the step, reality tends to be far more expansive, surprising and alive than anything we had projected.

In a way, this is what psychologists point to when they speak about self-actualisation. It is also what many spiritual traditions refer to as "waking up."

Not waking up into some abstract or distant state, but waking up to this life. The one that is already here.

Stepping out of the loop of imagined futures and remembered pasts, and into the direct, grounded experience of being alive, right now.

🧘‍♀️ Mini Mindfulness Exercise: Interrupting the Pattern

Duration: 5 – 10 minutes

Instructions:

Step 1 – Bring to mind a repeating situation
Choose a situation where you tend to react automatically. Keep it simple and specific.

Step 2 – Feel it in the body
Notice what happens in your body when you imagine this situation.
Tension, tightness, heat, contraction. Let your attention rest there.

Step 3 – Name the pattern gently
Silently say: “This is the usual pattern.”
No judgement. Just recognition.

Step 4 – Pause and breathe
Take three slow breaths.
Let the out-breath be slightly longer than the in-breath.

Step 5 – Ask one question
“What would a different response look like here?”
Don’t force an answer. Just allow possibilities.

Step 6 – Choose a small shift
Not a perfect response. Just a slightly different one.
Something more aligned, more honest, or more kind.

Step 7 – Visualise yourself doing it
See yourself in that situation, responding in this new way.

Purpose:
This exercise trains the exact moment where change becomes possible. It strengthens awareness at the point of reaction, which is where patterns usually take over. By rehearsing a different response in a grounded, embodied way, you increase the likelihood of accessing that choice in real life.

This question helps bring unconscious patterns into awareness. Change doesn’t begin with effort. It begins with seeing clearly where we are repeating. Once we can recognise where we go on autopilot, we create the conditions for a different choice.
